MIDI, the original word is Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is an industry-standard electronic communications protocol. MIDI is a communications standard developed for electronic instruments and computers. It allows music and sound synthesizers from different manufactures to communicate with each other by sending messages along cables connected to the devices. The messages are musical score, including notes, sequence of notes, and type of instruments.

In general, MIDI data is used in many circumstances. Digital audio will not work if users do not have enough RAM, hard disk space, CPU processing power or bandwidth. Besides, users have a high-quality MIDI sound source and complete control over the playback hardware. Users do not need spoken dialog also.

How to make MIDI audio? To make MIDI scores, a sequencer software and a sound synthesizer. The sound synthesizer is typically built into the sound card on computers. The sequencer software like Midisoft Studio for Windows lets the users to record and edit MIDI data. The sequencer software helps to quantizes the score to adjust for inconsistencies also. Besides, the software records the user's actions on the MIDI keyboard in real time. Instruments that the user can synthesize are identified by a General MIDI numbering system that ranges from 0 to 127.

Through this, MIDI is best used in multimedia project. MIDI allows computers, synthesizers, MIDI controllers, sound cards, samplers and drum machines to control one another, and to exchange system data. Almost all music recordings today utilize MIDI as a key enabling technology for recording music.
